The Contemporaines Burgundy ref. 1120-EU LV by Lundis Bleus is a truly beautiful watch where the elements of the independent company’s contemporary design are fused with the centuries old craft of kiln fired enamelling, and captured in a fabulous harmonious balance. A masterpiece of modernist design it’s a watch where detail is everywhere, yet each one subtle and flowingly complementary to the whole. Featuring a stunning hand crafted 950/1000 sterling silver dial with burgundy grand feu enamel beneath a box-sided sapphire crystal, and equipped with a high grade Swiss automatic movement beating within the beautifully sculpted rounded stainless steel case, it is stylish, cool and distinctively individual.

With its narrow bezel and tall sided sapphire crystal, the dial fills out the wide expanse below, and makes the watch seem larger than its 40mm. Entirely manufactured by hand in the Lundis Bleus atelier, each dial is created individually, with the sterling silver base finished with “ocean surface” texture, before being glazed over with several layers of oven fired grand feu enamel in a gorgeous burgundy colour. The purity of the dial is preserved with only slender pad printed indices and the brand motif applied in a silver varnish, complementing the brushed steel hands.

The talent, attention to detail and sub-zero cool for which this small Swiss artisanal brand is quickly gaining a zen-like following is emphatically illustrated with the design and execution of its fabulous two part case. Eleven millimetres tall, the Contemporaines Burgundy edition has a bowl-like profile with inclining curvature which tapers towards the underside, and the crown is similarly styled, and because the lugs are part of the caseback and not in contact with the body itself, it’s almost flying saucer-esque as it seems to hover in a magnetic field without ever touching the lugs. Underneath, the Lundis Bleus motif is outlined above a blue mineral glass through which the reliable Swiss made Sellita SW-300-01 Premium automatic movement can be seen.

Setting the piece off to perfection is the shark grey suede strap whose soft natural texture provides superb comfort, and which has a cool electric blue suede lining hiding underneath. It is secured with a brushed steel pin buckle,
